FAQ - (Frequently Asked Questions)
Who is Mahogany Rose?
My name is Melody De Vivero and I am the owner/photographer for Mahogany Rose Photography. I am a natural light portrait photographer. Wow, that says a whole lot. But what does that mean? Well, it means that I am skilled in the art photographing my clients/subject(s) using natural light sources. I almost always shoot outdoors unless I'm shooting a session that requires us to be indoors and even then I'm using natural light. I rarely use flash or reflectors. If I feel that it is needed I will, but it rarely happens for my style of photography. I have been interested in photography since I was a child. That interest has allowed me to photograph several events including private and public for family and friends. If you have been referred to me or seeking a professional natural light photographer, hopefully, you will take the time to review my website/blog and possibly book a portrait session with me. If so click here. If you are interested in keeping up to date with all that is Mahogany Rose, updates regarding specials or blog post please subscribe here.
Please take your time and have a look around.
Thank you.
What should I wear for my session?
That decision is usually left up to the client, however, I do offer recommendations. I know this can be a challenge for some. I offer a number of resources to assist you with your selections. Looking through more recent sessions in the session showcase may give you additional insight. I always suggest color and coordination because it just works well but wear what makes you feel comfortable. Of course, if pajamas were your theme then okay but for a professional or formal family session, I would suggest taking the time to really think about color options and what's most flattering to you. For clients deciding to wear their Sunday best or getting gussied up, phenomenal results can be expected, but if that isn't your style, taking a thoughtful approach when preparing for your session can net you the same result.
What should I expect on the day of my portrait session?
To have fun! I love for my clients to be relaxed and have as much fun as possible. When you're relaxed your photos will turn out ten times better. Stuffy or stiff posing is not my approach to photography, so I usually walk my clients through poses and make very corny jokes to help them forget the lens. Let me worry about adjusting your hair, jewelry and clothing so that you look your absolute best. If you are being photographed with a significant other or family member, I want the interaction naturally occurring as it would any other time. Some of the best images are those captured while people are reacting to one another.
How do I book a session?
You may contact me through this website by clicking here. You should receive a response within 24 hours with further information. Once a mutual date is agreed to, a contract will be sent and the appointment will be confirmed once I receive the signed agreement and required deposit.
Do you do event photography or photograph newborns?
Unfortunately not at this time, however if you are booking a family portrait session and you have a newborn I will most certainly include them in the session.
Why does custom photography cost so much?
Because the session is customized and considered a personal relationship between the client and photographer. I consult with clients by taking the time to discuss locations, understand their specific needs and how they envision being photographed. Even though I offer a variety of packages I often end up tailoring the package to suit the needs of my client. Mahogany Rose Photography does not offer cookie cutter, cut and paste services. I am in the business of producing a quality product and having satisfied customers who look forward to an ongoing professional relationship. For a more in depth understanding and breakdown of the cost and time regarding custom photography please refer to a long time, well-respected professional Marianne Drenthe who does a wonderful job of providing a detailed explanation.
Why choose custom photography?
Custom photography is a choice. Much like that of choosing an automobile or a home. You usually decide based on budget, color, comfort, quality, desire and the finished product. Some people like an economical solution to transportation. And others prefer style and luxury as long as it suits their budget. There are plenty of options for a cookie cutter in studio sessions and they deliver a great product. Same as the economical transportation. However, if you are an individual that prefers a more custom experience with a not so cookie cutter product then custom photography may be for you. Choosing the right photographer based on experience, style and connection yes that is important. If you feel that you and your photographer connect, chances are the portrait session is going to be a wonderful experience. They might be interacting with your family and loved ones so connection and likeability is important. Custom photography is not for everyone. It requires a level of great skill, time, money, a level of commitment and planning on the part of the subject/client.
Most clients seeking custom photography understand its value and enjoy taking a more active role in creating a timeless and treasured portrait that is truly personalized. These clients are usually more discerning and are known to take the time to prepare for the expense and select a photographer that will ensure their vision. Many clients want their most important events not only to be documented they want their memories to be artfully displayed in their homes or spaces that they dwell. It is something not all families and individuals may have the budget for but they may set aside a time of year to do it once a year for a family portrait and allot a certain amount of money to do a portrait session. If you are a business professional and you are concerned about the image you convey online or how you market your business, custom photography allows you to customize the look and the image you desire for that business.
Why are digital files so expensive?
Digital files are the highest priced item because they are the most valuable and versatile purchase. With your purchase, you receive a CD/USB of high-resolution images and can make prints (from wallets to poster size), canvas/wall art, photo books, social media profiles, holiday cards, business cards, websites, etc (anything you desire) at any time in the future. Once you have your high-resolution files, you have no reason to come back to your photographer(me..lol) since you’re able to make prints/products from those files yourself. With that being the case, the high-resolution digital files are priced accordingly considering their value :)
